The monoposto, or open-wheeler, version of the W196 was debuted at the 1954 German GP following a poor performance by the streamliner version at Silverstone. Enabling more accurate handling on twisting circuits, this version of the W196 served well in Fangio's hands, helping him achieve two consecutive F1 World Championships in 1954 and 1955.
